Great news: Dutch investments grew by 7 per cent

One of the critical indicators of a country that is growing economically is growing investments within the country. More assets mean that the economy's productive capacity has space to grow, and there are more possibilities for the expenditure of capital spending, like buying more innovative machines or robots that enable automation. Hence, increasing these investments will likely boost economic growth (Pettinger, 2019). In May 2023, the volume of investments in tangible fixed assets increased by 7 per cent in the Netherlands. And that is excellent news (CBS, 2023).

Increased Investments

The 7 per cent rise in investments was primarily due to the increased investments in buildings, airplanes and passenger cars. However, it is not the most significant increase of the year, as a 9 per cent growth was already shown in January (CBS, 2023). This growth is welcome after last year when the economy showed a slight decline because of the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis, rising housing prices and higher inflation than usual. In 2023, the economy is recovering, inflation has slowed, and housing prices are stabilizing, forecasting economic prosperity in the years to come.

Circular Economy

Moreover, in 2024, it is expected for the economy to keep growing. Unemployment rates will remain low, and wages are expected to grow around 5.5 per cent. Economic growth will likely be 1.3 per cent in 2024 (DNB, 2023). And because of the Accelerated Climate Investments scheme that started in July 2023, it is easier for companies to work more towards a circular economy. The new laws aim to reduce carbon dioxide, and there is broader support for green investments (RVO, 2023).
